Koster comments on Locke's visit and news out of LA

Arlington, WA - September 20, 2010 - In response to Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke's visit to Everett today and news reports out of Los Angeles last week providing evidence of that city's breathtaking waste of the taxpayer dollars, John Koster is asking Congressman Rick Larsen and Gary Locke for accountability of the stimulus money spent.

On Thursday of last week, Los Angeles City Controller Wendy Greuel released two audits (click here and here) examining how L.A. has used "stimulus" money received through President Obama's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and issued a press release noting that the $111 million in federal stimulus dollars created only 55 jobs, which works out to an unconscionable $2 million per job.

Larsen Hypocritical in Ad; supports RSA's, criticizes Koster for doing same

Arlington, WA - September 14, 2010 - Recently, Rick Larsen has taken to the airwaves trying to scare people into voting against John Koster. Larsen misleadingly claims that Koster supports cutting Medicare benefits and that he wants to gamble social security benefits on Wall Street.

In 2000 Larsen signed the Hyde Park Declaration.  One of the goals of the Hyde Park Declaration was to create Retirement Savings Accounts, the same thing he is criticizing John Koster for supporting.

Matt Parker, spokesman for Koster for Congress, commented, "Rick Larsen should have looked at his own record before carelessly throwing bombs at John Koster.  I assume Rick Larsen has simply forgotten his own position on this issue after ten years of voting for huge deficits and increased debt.

"Rick Larsen's multi-trillion dollar spending spree has bankrupted America. We are now 14 trillion dollars in debt because of Rick Larsen's out-of-control spending. Rick Larsen has put us on track to bankrupt Medicare, bankrupt Social Security, and hike taxes to historic levels to pay for his financial mismanagement.

"And, if Rick Larsen is so concerned about seniors in Washington State, why did he vote to cut hundreds of billions of dollars from Medicare and the Medicare Advantage program seniors depend upon? These cuts threaten thousands of seniors and their access to their current personal physicians.

Parker concluded "On Social Security and Medicare, Rick Larsen is selling snake oil and his prescription is bad medicine."

Everett Herald endorsement / 2nd Congressional District

Send capable Koster to D.C.

In a decade as the 2nd District's congressional representative, Rick Larsen has kept a relatively low profile. The cerebral Democrat has focused appropriately on key local issues, including anything involving the Navy or Boeing, and helping to connect small exporters with potential customers.

His position on the Armed Services Committee has been helpful to Snohomish and Island counties, and he scored a victory, along with Sen. Patty Murray, with the designation of the Wild Sky Wilderness.

Still, after five terms in the House, Larsen lacks the get-it-done reputation of other members who have assumed greater leadership roles, or who have had a major impact on the nation's legislative agenda. We're left thinking that the 2nd Congressional District can do better.

This year, Republican John Koster represents a highly capable alternative. He has earned our endorsement for his varied experience, in business and government, and a get-it-done attitude that seems well suited to the economic challenges the nation faces.

Larsen Scares Seniors, Distorts Koster's Position

Koster Responds to Larsen's Disinformation Campaign on Social Security & Medicare

Arlington, WA - September 13, 2010 - Perhaps as a diversion from his economy stifling policies and disastrous voting record, Rick Larsen's disinformation campaign hit the airwaves this past week, scaring seniors and distorting my position on Social Security and Medicare.

Let me start by saying that I do not support privatization of Social Security and I will not support any effort to defund or pull the rug out from seniors depending on the Social Security and Medicare systems.  My philosophical position on these critical programs can be summed up in one sentence:  I believe that we must make good on our commitments to seniors, and we must make certain the fiscal solvency of Social Security and Medicare for now and in the future.

Larsen caught telling another whopper

Arlington, WA - September 8, 2010 - Those who watched the Koster/Larsen debate on KING TV 5 Up Front over the Labor Day weekend or read Rick Larsen's Sept. 3 press release, were witness to yet another dishonest attack on John Koster. This time, Larsen (employing the same tactic as other congressional tax and spenders) intentionally misrepresents the language of the Taxpayer Protection Pledge and the meaning behind it.

During the KING 5 debate and in his press release, Larsen accuses Koster of signing a pledge to give tax breaks to companies who send jobs overseas. In truth, the pledge that Koster signed was authored by an organization (Americans for Taxpayer Reform) dedicated to protecting the American people from tax hikes. By signing the pledge, candidates and elected officials put their no-new-taxes rhetoric in writing.
