| The newly drawn 1st Congressional District
is a large geographical land area containing mostly rural lands within
the boundaries as set by the Washington State Redistricting Committee in
January of 2012. The demography of the district is diverse. Taking in thousands of square miles of agricultural lands, timberlands, and mountain wilderness areas to the east of the I-405 and I-5 corridor, the district is considered mostly rural, although 40% of the population is located in the high density cities and towns and suburban areas of north King County. Starting in Medina, the western part of the district takes in the four county (north King, east Snohomish, east Skagit, east Whatcom) areas to the east of I-405 and I-5 all the way to the Canadian border. The eastern boundary is the cascade crest and the southern boundary runs (roughly) along I-90 from Snoqualmie Pass to the Issaquah city limits, then up the east side of Lake Sammamish, and includes the entire cities of Redmond and Kirkland.
